Magical Notions celebrates the wisdom of the world’s nature religions, as well as the gifts that science can offer us along our spiritual growth journey. Nature religions, unlike the Big Three, are not dualistic. That means like nature, the cosmos is not divisible into good and bad or black and white camps. While the Big Three find black an “evil” color; nature religions recognize black as the color associated with both alchemical Earth and Water. That is because if you go beneath the top layers of either soil or the ocean, you enter into darkness. Same is true if you climb thru the atmospheric layer in the airspace. You enter the blackness of outer space.
Thus, black represents the mystery behind appearance. It is a color of absorption, introspection, understanding and is associated with the female. Again, not because female is “evil” – but because the womb is dark. New life grows and is nurtured in blackness, Nothing “evil”, negative, or nasty about it. Consider that when you next ponder why our species still defiles our environment. We’ve been conditioned to disrespect Earth, Water and Air.
For me, because it honors sacred mystery, the feminine, the ocean, the earth and the womb of outer space ( in which we all float) – black is the most spiritual of colors. It is all-inclusive and inherently nurturing. White, by contrast, repels everything. Consider that when you next ponder our species proclivity for holy wars.
I think we can all use a little nurturing in our interactions – a little nature religion wisdom in our lives. I hope you agree.
